Carrel was never actually accused of any war crimes and there is no evidence that his enthusiasm for eugenics had any practical consequences. To a certain extent they have to be viewed in the historical perspective of their time. As a curious fact it can be mentioned that the first proposal in 1918 for a Nobel Institute at the Karolinska Institute was an Institute for Heredity and Racial Biology. It was rejected by a narrow majority of the faculty. Carrel’s reputation in the US was heavily tarnished by his association with the Vichy government, and it took time for it to be restored, and then only in part. In 1973, on his centenary, streets in France were called after him and a few years earlier the University of Lyon had named one of its medical schools after him. This, however, did not last more than a few decades, and Carrel was again attacked as a racist and his name removed from the medical school.
